Is not just a magician.

He's a local attorney who has been happily married for over 50 years and has 2 beautiful daughters.

And Rich is a bit of a local celebrity...

I was lucky enough to interview Mr. Magic in his Law office in Norwich CT.

A little history about Rich

Exerts from my interview with Mr. Magic. The full interview can be seen here.

I'm an attorney in Norwich for 55 years. And once again, practicing law because I enjoy doing what I'm doing. It's helping people out. Once again, it's not a money thing that motivates me to do what I do. I try not to turn anybody down. I try and help as many people as they can. They come through the door in whatever ways they need some help. And I've been, of course successful for 55 years. And that's what keeps me moving on.

How I got started with Magic

I went to a magic show. And this was about 45 years ago was so and there was a magician performing. And at the end of the show, he asked me to give him a hand carrying all his magical props into his station wagon.

So I did.

And he loaded the station wagon up. And as he drove off the back of the station wagon, the tailgate dropped, and some of his props fell on the road.

I tried to stop him by waving but he didn't see me.
So I went, I picked up the props.
I went inside to where the show was performed and is the director there.

How do you get a hold of this guy? I want to give him his stuff back. So he gave me his contact number. I called him up. And he came over to my house.

And he said, Do you like magic?

And I said, I've always loved magic.

Even when I was a little child, he said, I'm president of our local magic club. I'd like to invite you to our next meeting. And we meet once a month, he probably figured I wouldn't show up.

But I did show up.

  • And following that, we would go to conventions.
  • We would go to lectures.
  • We go to places that sell magic
  • And I would pick items up and I started hunting items at different places all over the world.
  • And I began building up my repertoire to be able to perform shows.
  • And I had been going to those club meetings for about 40 some odd years.
I love to entertain
  • I worked for Billie Jean King for two years, down at the tennis center in New York.
  • I did the D league basketball for the NBA. For about six years.
  • I ran a softball tournament where I incorporated all of the sound effects and music into just an everyday tournament to make it a one of a kind tournament.
  • I did Central Connecticut for about 25 years, playing the music and sounds for the men's and women's basketball team.
  • Still doing the music and sounds at the State High School Championship game some probably 28 years now doing that, every bit of that. For the finals of the many boys and girls, they now have five divisions for the boys and five divisions for the girls.
  • I did the Norwich navigators baseball team for 11 years
  • I did World Team Tennis for about six or seven years for the Hartford Fox for us.
  • And two years, Billie Jean King invited me to come to New York to do the semifinals and finals at the tennis center where they hold the US Open right there.
  • I coach the Little League for 23 years.
Why I continue to do magic

That's me during my tour in Vietnam

The Vietnam War...

I don't make money the bottom line to what I do, because I spent the year in Vietnam back in 1969 1970.

And I said if I ever come back safely, I'll give back in some way...

And one of the first things I thought of was remembering how I felt as a little child, nine or 10 years old and the excitement and the amazement, and it did something to me.

And so I said I'll return that in some way by performing and trying to stimulate other people the way I felt.

I just like to give back

And I don't want to create the impression that here I am.
Give me what you're paying me and I'll do something for an hour.

I want to come I want the people to enjoy, I want to enjoy.
And in giving prizes away and a nice, let's say stuffed animal at the end of the show.
It makes me feel good.

I did a show with this one campground. Six years go by.
And this father came up to me.

And he said, I want you to meet my son. And you'll notice he has a teddy bear in his arms. You gave him that teddy bear six years ago, he still has it to this day. It makes you feel good that you made this child that happy.

And that's just I think a mirror example of all of the children that win the prize at the end of the show.

And it's a nice feeling you're giving back

The people that book you for the show are seeing that you're giving things back to them.

Just as a nice feeling when you do something like that and the excitement when they win the prize. Priceless. Priceless.
